Q&A About Immunization - Archives

Question from an EPI staff member:
What are the side effects for women receiving vaccine Tetanus Toxoid (TT) more than 12 times within 15 years--without appropriate standards and monitoring?

Answer:
This WHO Position Paper on tetanus was prepared in May 2006 and under the "adverse events" section responds to this question.

Specifically, it states that:
"Mild systemic reactions including fever, aches and malaise occur in 0.5-1% of vaccines following
booster injections. In general, both local and systemic reactions increase with increasing numbers of doses. Severe generalized adverse events such as anaphylactic reactions and brachial neuritis are extremely rare, 1-6 and 5-10 per million administered doses, respectively."

For additional information, there is also a bibliography of references that were used in the preparation of the WHO position paper.
